45 - CSI Challenge

CSI means colour, stories and inspiration.  A place to try new colour combos, be encouraged to journal and be inspired by other talented artists. It's a fun and friendly place to play.  The earthy colours this week inspired me to scrap a heritage photo.

Because of the topic, I wanted the page to be stark and bare; in keeping with the living conditions my ancestors endured, both in Europe and when they first arrived in the colony.  I had an idea in my mind about how the page would look and could not get it to emerge on the page.  Eventually I ripped every thing to pieces and started again. The little Barque at the bottom is a picture of the ship they travelled on.

I used the words, comfort, family and home to inspire my journalling and wrote it like a tale.

THE JOURNALLING READS

My Father’s ancestors emigrated to Australia from Pudewitz, Posen Province, Prussia during a terrible and turbulent time of religious persecution and civil war in Europe.

The majority of Prussians belonged to the Lutheran Church whilst the Royal Family belonged to the Reformed Church which had different doctrines.  King Friedrich Wilhelm the Third decreed the two should become one and began sanctions against Lutheran Pastors and their congregations.  Because they did not comply with the King’s edict, ordinary people had their food rationed, lost their jobs and their children were expelled from school.

My Great Grandparents were labelled dissenters, rebels and traitors.   They decided to leave, but could not head toward Russia because of a Polish uprising on the border.

Instead they travelled by bullock cart to the Crossen area where they boarded river barges along the canals to Hamburg.  During the voyage they had rotten fruit and pig swill thrown at them as people berated them for deserting.  In Hamburg they waited in tents for several weeks before boarding the Barque “Sophie” bound for South Australia.  After a perilous three and a half months at sea, they landed at Port Adelaide on 25 October 1866.

My Great Grandfather, Johann Gottlieb Neumann aged 29, his wife Ernastine Amalie Hausknecht aged 19 and their daughter Auguste Emilie, aged 3, travelled to Rosenthal in the Barossa Valley, where Johann secured work at his trade as a carpenter.

We think Great Grandfather built a cottage at Rosenthal where he scrimped and saved money to invest in land.  During this time, his wife Amalie had another eight children.

Twelve years later, in 1878, they had saved enough for a deposit and bought 484 acres of land at Halbury, on credit. This is the home Great Grandfather built on that land.  It was mainly timber framed and plastered with mud mixed with straw; a pug and pine dwelling.

It had a stone fireplace in the main living room and the kitchen at the rear had a stone hearth and bake oven.  The roof was thatched with straw and sported the latest in architectural trends, a corrugated, galvanized iron verandah on the front.

When I learned of the abject poverty and persecution they endured in Europe and their refusal to be dictated to by the King, I began to understand why they were so fiercely independent, so stubborn and so passionate about their religious convictions.

The Australian branch of the Neumann family began when they had the courage to set out in search of freedom in a strange land.               Journalling 8th October 2012

TESTIMONY
I chose to journal about something I love in my home and that is the relationship between our Grandson and his beloved Pa. I included the word "sunny" and wrote it as a bit of a fan letter to both of them.

THE JOURNALLING READS.

Here you are, the day before your fifth birthday, being read to by Pa. I love to see you two delighting in each other’s company.  You are alike in many ways; you both like routine and are averse to change. I admire your thirst for knowledge and the way you ask “Why” and “What does that mean” a hundred times a day. Your Grandfather has infinite patience with your incessant questions; he never minds explaining the way things work. I love the way you retain the information you’re given and use it in the correct context sometime later. I look forward to our Granny & Pa days, when you are eager to come and spend time with us.  I respect the way you’ve worked hard to accept and love your twin brothers.   Your wicked sense of humour and honesty make me laugh out loud.  You are like a breath of fresh air in my life; I am refreshed and renewed by your curiosity & joie de vivre.   Love Granny 18 Oct 2012

42 - CSI Challenge

Gorgeous bright primary colours this week at CSI.  They were perfect for these photos of one of our twin Grandsons at his big brother's 5th Birthday tea.

I looked at all the journalling prompts, but nothing really seemed relevent to the photos I wanted to scrap.  After two days of pondering, I used one of the inspirations words "small" and wove that into the story.

EVIDENCE USED
Circles
Polka dots
Texture paste
Grid design, on the back ground patterned paper

TESTIMONY

Here you are at 21 months playing with your big brother’s birthday rocket.
You don’t see that being small is any deterrent to “having a go” at things.  You watched Lachie stamping on the ball which sent air through a tube, up into the spout and “blast off”, the rocket shot up to the ceiling.
You waited until he had moved on to something else and then you kept trying until you got the hang of things. Just look at the delight on your baby face.  Mission accomplished.

Design Team

I'm so excited to be chosen to be on the design team for CSI along with some very talented artists from around the world.  It's a great on line challenge site which pushes me outside my comfort zone to try colours I would not normally use.  They emphasise journalling too, which is something I love.  Why not pop over and have a look.

The journalling reads:-

ALL I REALLY NEED TO KNOW

I learned from my friend & colleague

BERNADETTE

When safely cocooned in my family of origin, I assumed I understood how the world worked.  However, when I started nursing, I discovered there are many version of ‘normality’. My family’s philosophy on life, with its‘stiff upper lip’ and ‘don’t complain, don’t explain’ ideologies, was not the only way to live.

Bernadette was my senior Nurse and mentor when I first began Nursing Training in a small country town.  I was still a naive kid and socially inept, when she tucked me under her wing, having noticed that I struggled with information overload and crippling shyness.

Her practical work ethic I understood, however hers was tempered with a keen sense of the ridiculous and good natured teasing.  She located my funny bone and massaged it into life.

She was a free spirit, made friends easily, loved to dance and play tennis and I was dragged along for the ride.  Gradually, my buttoned down mask dissolved in the warmth of her friendship.

Bernadette consoled me when I witnessed my first death and rejoiced with me at the miracle of birth.  We laughed and cried together as we experienced the raw and intense emotional extremes of a career in Nursing.
In later years we saw each other less frequently.  She lived a thousand kilometres away and we were each busy with our own families.  Yet, when we visited, we could just pick up where we left off.  I remember once, calling into her home for afternoon tea; husband and three kids in tow and leaving a week later!

Bernadette was an adventurer, she went abseiling, rode camels in the desert and travelled third world countries on her own.  She was a vivacious and courageous woman, authentic and loyal, witty and wise, like a sparkling star leading the way to Nirvana.

She died too soon, my dear friend, a swift and savage death due to cancer.  I cherished our friendship and I will always miss her. Vale Bernadette.
